Good Night

Just a quick post to say goodnight.  I’ve been busy here since I got home from work-had a quick nap, played with the girls and went grocery shopping.  I packed up some mini-photo albums to take with me to work tomorrow.  I want to get them sorted and start thinking of scrapbooking layouts for them.  I have to keep myself busy.  The atmosphere is suffocating!  Morale is so low, and no-one thinks that it’s because of them and their gossiping.  Blah!  I just try to keep out of it, and keeping myself busy is one way to do that!

What?   I should maybe work to keep myself busy?  Yeah, I guess that would work, but my main job is to answer phones.  If no-one calls in, there’s no work to do!

Anyway, goodnight!

My Library Stack

I’ve got a few books from the library that I’ working through right now.  I’ve got:

The Brief History of The Dead-read my post below, it’s a great book!

Don’t Get Too Comfortable, by David Rakoff-it’s pretty good, it’s a commentary on the excesses of modern life.  The paragraph about Karl Lagerfeld is worth reading the book by itself!  Even if the rest was tripe (which it isn’t!), that paragraph is a jewel!  Hilarious, but not so much a commentary as a description of the excesses in the world.

A Student of Weather by Elizabeth Hay-I haven’t read it yet, I’m trying to start it but having a hard time.  I’m trying to read at work, and it’s not going to well.  It’s pretty noisy and busy here, and unless a book catches me right away I find it hard to concentrate on the opening paragraphs while I’m at work.  Her book Late Nights on Air won the Giller prize last year, so I’ve got high hopes for A Student of Weather.

The Other Boleyn Girl by Phillipa Gregory-Haven’t started it yet, but I love her stuff.  I’ve always been fascinated by stories of monarchy, and you don’t get much better than the stories of Henry VIII and his many wives/lovers!  I especially liked Gregory’s novel The Boleyn Inheritance.

The Best of Roald Dahl by Roald Dahl-I can’t recall ever reading anything by Dahl.  I’m excited to get into this one.  It’s a book of short stories for adults.

The Book of Secrets (Unlocking the hidden dimensions of your life) by Deepak Chopra-I’m not a huge fan of self-help, self-analyzing sort of books, but I’ve been in a funk lately and I figure something to help change my attitude or way of thinking is good!

Feeling Guilty

This morning’s thought made me remember something that I still feel guilty for.  When I was 13 I was in Montreal for a visit, and while there I saw a group of musicians from South America (not sure exactly where they were from, it was a while ago).  They were buskers (street performers) and one person in the group spoke english.  He asked the spectators not to take pictures, as they believed that pictures stole a person’s soul.  The ignorant teen that I was, I took a picture anyway.  I have always felt guilty about that.  I am still sorry that I took that picture.

This Morning’s Thought

I listen to a morning show on the radio that has a really great host.  I like to listen to modern/alternative rock, and I often find that the morning show DJs often employ crass humor (sex, bodily functions, that sort of thing)  It gets really tiring after a while, especially when all the yahoos start phoning in with their stories.  Anyway, I really enjoy what this one guy has to say.  Although, he does claim that he hasn’t farted in front of his wife of 10+ years.  Ever!  I find that hard to believe!

So, last year the local Hutterite group managed to win a case in court that has resulted in them not having to have their pictures on their driver’s licenses.  They say it violates their religious rights-they don’t believe in having their pictures taken.  So, it really bothered this guy (and myself).  In this day and age where identity is so important, you need a picture ID for just about anything, and identity theft is so rampant, you’d think that valid picture IDs are a non-issue.  You have to have one.  Period.  It’s not like these people hide out on their farms all their lives and you never see them either, they are out and about in mainstream society all the time, shopping, banking, and yes-even driving.

So the other day this radio announcer was at one of the local tourist traps, and what did he see there?  A hutterite with a digital camera!  What?!?!?!?  If they don’t believe in having their pictures taken, why would they have a camera?  Presumably to take pictures of the tourist trap.   But then, if they don’t take their pictures, what pictures are they taking?  Or of who?  If they don’t believe in having their picture taken, why would they take pictures of others?  And why digital?  I thought they didn’t believe in modern things like computers?  Just boggled my mind, that’s all.

BTW, if I ever post anything on here that is factually wrong, please feel free to politely correct me!  Polite being the operative word please!  Thanks!

The Brief History of The Dead

By Kevin Brockmeier

Great book! Based on an African legend that when you die, your soul (spirit?) doesn’t go to heaven right away. It stays in a middle place, until the last person that actually knew you dies. Well, in this book everyone on earth has died from a super-virus except for one person, an adventurer on the south pole. The books explores life in the ‘middle place’ and explores the idea of memory and what it is you remember about certain people that have been in your life. It also talks a bit about the sheer number of people that you encounter (and remember) in a lifetime. Not just relatives, friends, etc. but people that you encounter on a day-to-day basis.

Intros

So, I put a little blurb about myself, but I thought I’d introduce you to my family.  I’ll call my husband Hubby from now on.  He’s 30-something, a tradesperson and the love of my life.  He’s an amazing father, I love him even more now that I see how he is around the kids.  He makes me laugh, cry and scream (in both good and bad ways!  ;) )

I’ll call my oldest Sweet-Pea.  She’s 6 going on 30, very mature and serious.  She loves animals, Webkinz and her friends.  She loves anything that makes her seem older-argh!  She is very smart, and takes French Immersion in school.  She’s got this great little french accent when she talks french, and even rolls her Rs!  She loves reading and playing Scrabble.

My youngest is Princess.  She’s 3 and is my little monkey.  She can’t stay still, so much so that I am starting to worry about her and school, but there’s lots of time for that!  She loves her Polly Pockets, Ponies, and dress-up stuff.  She idolizes her big sister, but doesn’t let her push her around just the same!  She loves to help me cook, especially bake.  She doesn’t like shopping, much to my dismay!

Spellchecker

I just noticed that there’s a spellcheck on this thing.  Cool!!!  Maybe now I won’t make so many spelling mistakes.

Good Things

My 3 year old got SO excited when I told her that I wasn’t going to be working anymore!  She was jumping all over the place!  She’s going to have a hard time going to school, she’s been at home with me all her life and she’s perfectly happy with that situation.

I phoned the car loan place today, and we’ve got 3 more months left on our loan!  This month we paid off a large consolidated loan that we had too, so things are looking good financially!  Hopefully we’ll be able to buy a house when we move!

I’m off tomorrow.  Not sure what we’ll do yet, but I won’t answer the phone that’s for sure!

My Tantrum

Warning:  Major whining will occur.

I gave notice at my job today.  I know I complain about it lots, and I wanted fewer hours, but I didn’t want to leave it altogether.  My hubby got a better job, working more hours, leaving it pretty much impossible for me to work.  I don’t want to leave my job!  I like working!

For the past 4 years or so, it’s been all about HIS work, HIS schooling, HIS plan.  Which, admittedly has been OUR plan as well.  Well, last spring he finished his training.  Finally.  We worked long and hard, but it got done in the timetable we wanted.  I was just hoping that this year it would be about me.  I suppose it is, because it is my plan to move across the country, closer to the ocean.  Sigh.  I can’t wait until I get settled into my plan.  I can’t wait to go back to school again.  I am so looking forward to it!  In my spare time at work, I constantly look at the different schools in the area where we are going to move, looking at the programs and courses.  I loved school!

An Observation

I’m having some online discussion with a lesbian friend of mine who has just had a baby by artificial insemination.  Herself and her partner are having the typical new parent arguments-about sleeping, feeding, possible spoiling, that sort of thing.  It’s nice to hear that same-sex couples go through the same arguments and issues that heterosexual couples do.  Nice and sad at the same time.  Sad because it means that you never escape it either!
