This is really happening!

I booked the movers yesterday.  A huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders!  This is really going to happen.  A big-ass truck is going to come to my house, load up all my stuff, and then drive it across Canada!  I am so excited!

Now it’s time to pack.  I think that we’ll have another yard sale-weather was pretty crappy at the last one, and we’ve decided to get rid of more of our stuff.  I took a look around my kitchen yesterday, the pantry, fridge and freezer are all pretty full…..time to stop Costco shopping for sure!  Ah well, whatever doesn’t get used will get donated to the food bank.  We’ve got some of hubby’s work stuff that I want to donate to the Bissell centre.  There’s a lot of ‘working homeless’ in the city that have a hard time getting the gear to go to work with, and lots of hubby’s stuff was given to him by the various companies he’s worked for.  I’ve got 2 pairs of steel-toed shoes that I will donate as well.

Sleeping Sickness

Here’s a youtube post of City and Color with Gord Downie this Sunday.  Remember it was taken by an amateur from the audience, so quality is crappy, but it was the highlight of the weekend for lots of people, including me!

My Weekend

So, hubby and I went to Calgary all by ourselves this weekend to see VirginFest. Contrary to popular jokes made by cheesey radio announcers, I did not go to get my virginity back, neither did I go to relieve the time I lost it-that wasn’t a fun time for anyone involved, reliving it is not my idea of fun! ;)

The ride down was long and boring without the kids chattering away in the backseat. There was quite the storm that swept through Red Deer right before we arrived there, the power was out in Gasoline Alley (it’s a massive rest stop area with gas stations, fast-food places and family-style restaurants). It’s where I always go pee, and well I was full! So, we headed onto Innisfail, and proceeded to stop at the dirtiest McDonald’s I have ever been in. No word of a lie, I have been in bathrooms in gas stations where the bathroom door is outside the station that have been cleaner than this. The guy working there was a sight too. I don’t know if he truly did not care that much, or if he was stoned, or just plain ol dumb, but he was slower than molasses and got all his orders wrong-I witnessed about five in the time to get my milkshake and burger. Now I remember why it had been years since I stepped foot into a McDs.

Anyway, back to the point. Saturday came along and we decided to take our time getting to the concert. Hubby however conveniently forgot that I wanted to see one of the early bands, and we were too late for Carolina Liar, which I was disappointed about. We walked around the area a bit, people watched and checked out the entertainment on the TD stage. We caught Hey Ocean, a band from BC that were pretty good. We headed back over to the mainstage for Stone Temple Pilots, and caught the last of the Flaming Lips set. Can’t say that I was too impressed, they did a good show but I’m not a fan. One thing that happened during their set was that they played a cover of a Led Zeppelin tune (can’t remember which one, sorry!) and when they introduced it, the lead singer mentioned something about ‘naked people’ so sure enough, 2 topless women got onstage, and one totally naked chick! They danced around, I don’t think it was set up, the band seemed pretty surprised. The audience didn’t seem too impressed, not much of a reaction from the audience either way. Here’s a pic of the screen (we rarely got close enough to see much of the stage):

Then came STP. They were amazing, as expected! Scot Weiland’s voice was a bit raspy, but he put on an amazing show. He, along with Gord Downie is one of those guys who just loves to be on stage. He loves the music, but he loves to perform too, and that shows. Hubby was thrilled, he’s been waiting a long time to see STP live, and had given up on seeing them once they broke up a couple of years ago. Here’s a pic from their show:

Day two:

Sunday we woke up and it was raining! A lot! Thankfully it blew off by lunchtime, and we were left with another perfect outdoor concert day. Sunny, with a few clouds, and a little bit of a breeze-just like Saturday!

I had a list of acts that I wanted to see on Sunday, starting with the Stars, and ending with The Hip, so we headed to the concert a bit earlier. We did the park and ride thing, and took the c-train. So nice not to have to worry about parking!

The Stars were great, a nice slightly mellow way to start the day. We took an old blanket and relaxed pretty close to the stage for the first little bit. Next came City and Color, and just like I had hoped, Gord Downie from the Hip came out to sing ‘Sleeping Sickness’ with the band. Dallas Green said that it was the first time that they had performed it live together, and it sounded great! Gord Downie also made an appearance with The Constantines earlier in the day, but I missed that. City and Color were great, they sounded amazing. Usually I find their songs a bit too mellow when I’m listening to the radio, but Dallas Green just poured his whole self into the live act, and it really captivated me!

Next came Matt Good, which is a great show too. I saw him live a few years ago, and it was good then too, but it was different this time. For one, I was sober this time, and I think so was he! LOL! He has also gone through a lot of big changes in the past few years. He rocked it with a good mix of his old and new stuff, and the audience was quite receptive!

Then the Hip. Ahh, the Hip. One of those big Canadian bands that never quite made it internationally, but will keep drawing the audience in year after year while touring Canada. They are one of those bands that I could see over and over again, I’m on time #3 now. They are consistently a great sounding live act. Gord Downie loves the theatrics, non-fans just google the song ‘New Orleans is Sinking-Killer Whale Version’ if you want an idea of what I mean. He kind of goes on and on though. If he would cut out about 20 minutes of the theatrics from the show it would be much better. You wouldn’t have those long lulls without singing, and the hard-core fans would still get their unique Gord Downie experience. Here’s a pic:

So, all in all it was a great weekend. The crowd was pretty mellow, no fights or anything that we saw. I was pretty pissed off during the Hip show though, hubby and I got closer than usual to the stage and there were people coming and going, pushing through, stepping on my feet, etc. I hate that. Just stay still and listen to the music! Lineups were atrocious, but they went pretty quickly. The beer tent lineups were the worst, but I’m not a big drinker during concerts, especially outdoor ones so I didn’t mind that I didn’t get a beer. Potties were plentiful, but quickly became gross-that’s to be expected, there were over 35, 000 tickets sold for the two days!

I didn’t like that we couldn’t leave once we came in. It would have been nice to see the earlier bands, then leave for something to eat, then be able to come back. I understand the reasoning around it though. It’s much easier for security to have the ‘once you leave, you don’t come back’ rule. I also didn’t like how much junk there was floating around. Lots of flyers, free keychains, drink mugs, re-usable shopping bags (I got 2 for you Jane!) that got used as tank tops, that sort of thing. For a music festival that tries to be environmentally friendly, there was a lot of junk being handed out. Junk that ended up on the ground by the end of the night. The 2 screens on either side of the mainstage were great to see the bands with, but they had a thing where you could text messages to a number, and the messages would go onscreen. Kind of annoying after a while. They also didn’t show what was happening onstage between songs, which sucked too.

All in all though, it was a really good weekend, and my complaints were minor. Certainly not enough to keep me from going again if I ever had the chance!

Here’s my last pic from the weekend, one of the line-ups for port-a-potties LOL!!!:

Fantastic Day Yesterday

We headed out to Jane’s yesterday for a bit of an informal picnic lunch and to get some rhubarb-which I forgot to do!  We had lots of fun playing outside, keeping Charlie (the pot-bellied pig) away from the picnic, and looking at Jane’s bees.  Something really cool happened too!  She got a swarm of bees!  We were looking at some flowers, then Jane started getting all excited.  All I heard was ‘I’ve got a swarm!’  I thought that it was her own bees, but no-it was a new swarm/hive/group-sorry I don’t know the proper terms!, with it’s own queen.  Jane proceded to cut the branches away from the bush in order to keep the group together, then put them in a large box to keep until she got some new bee-boxes ready for them!  I can’t believe the odds that a swarm would land in a bee-keepers yard!  Anyone else would have exterminated them out of there, but Jane is going to build them a home and feed them!   Here’s some pictures of it:

My latest read

http://www.amazon.com/review/product/1596911239/ref=dp_db_cm_cr_acr_txt?%5Fencoding=UTF8&showViewpoints=1

It’s called The Book of Dave, and it’s a really interesting premise.  Dave is a London cab driver, and his diaries are found 500 years after he lived, and the diaries are what the new civilization is based on.  Really simple explanation I gave, read more on the Amazon site!  The problem is that the people speak in a cockney-based language, and that’s the way that the author has written it.  It’s slow going, very slow.  The story has great potential, but I’m not sure I have the patience to get through the language aspect of it!

I love Canadian Healthcare!

I love the fact that I can walk into my Dr’s office for my yearly checkup and just have a chat.  Talk about family histories, things that have been bothering me over the past year, and boom!  He orders a test.  I have moles that I’m worried about?  Boom!  He tells me to make an appointment and he’ll remove them.

There are problems, absolutely.  It’s not a perfect system by any means.  People all over don’t have regular doctors, so they use walk-in-clincs, or even worse-ERs.  There are wait times, long wait times for certain tests and procedures.

But, it’s free.  Sure, we pay big taxes for it, but when one of my kids get sick and I’m not sure if it’s a virus or a bacterial infection, I can take them to a pediatrician and get them checked out for free.  I love that.  I don’t go in expecting big tests or prescriptions, I just want a professional to tell me what is wrong.  I love that when my kids get sick, I don’t worry about how much it will cost me, I don’t worry how much of my insurance I’ve used this year already,  I can focus on the health of my family.  I love that.

I love this country-and the medical system is just one of the reasons why!

This makes me so angry!

There’s a radio ad being broadcast now that a local union (hubby’s union) has sponsored.  It’s talking about the government, and how what the government is trying to do will result in lower pensions and less health coverage for union members.  Well, guess what?  Hubby is a union member, and I am still not getting health coverage!  For the first time in ten years of claiming common-law status, I am not automatically included in hubby’s medical plan with the kids.  I have to wait A YEAR! to be covered, or else get a letter signed by a lawyer or notary public or some other such crap.  Is this really 2008, or have I gone back to the dark ages?  Hubby complained to his shop steward, but no luck, it’s what we have to do.  Luckily I am native, and I get pretty good health care through my status.  Not as much extras as other plans, but it’s got the basics and that’s all I need right now.

The whole thing makes me so angry, and now the radio ad makes me think of it 4 or 5 times a day!

How?

How does facebook know that I’ve been thinking about a certain person a lot lately?  And always puts their face on my page?

Update.

Not much going on here the past couple of days.

I’ve been feeling crappy, can’t figure out if it is allergies or a cold.  I’m stocking up on vitamin C just in case though!

Hubby and Alex went to see the new Indiana Jones movie last night.  We had a few people telling us that it was not appropriate for a 7-year old, and then we’ve also had friends who took their younger kids to it.  Turns out she was OK with it, there were a couple of parts where she covered her eyes, but she didn’t have nightmares last night so that was good!

I did some successful shopping yesterday, got some new shirts and a really pretty skirt.  I’m so happy, usually shopping for me is like pulling teeth, I try on 20 items only to walk away with nothing, or a new purse or shoes-which I don’t need more of!!!

Today looks like a lovely day.  I’m planning on stopping by the library this AM whenever I get my butt in gear, then we have a playdate at 1 with a friend.  I still haven’t got out to get some rhubarb yet….are you still up for visitors sometime with all the workers there Jane?

My washer is broken, and the landlord still hasn’t gotten back to us.  I’ll be so happy when we are done renting….I hate depending on others for stuff like this.  When our dishwasher broke down he said for us to get it repaired and he would just pay us back, but I don’t trust him (not just him I have trust issues with lots of people!).  If we could get it in writing with specifics, I’d be OK with that, but we haven’t even signed a lease with the guy and he’s owned the place for almost a year!

I’m starting to build up stress about the move again.  Still don’t have a mover booked, waiting on hubby’s uncle to let us know what he’s found out about the movers based in NS-they’re the cheapest quote, so I hope that they have a good reputation!

Happy Father’s Day!

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there!  My hubby got breakfast made for him, and he is spending the day doing what he does best-fathering his 2 girls!  He’s got the patience of a saint, he’ll take them along with him just about anywhere.  Busy Canadian Tire?  He’ll bring the kids.  Need to clean the car?  Girls go with him.  So, on father’s day I get the house to myself.  Course, there’s a mountain of laundry, but I do my best work when I’m alone.

I don’t know how I ended up with him, but I thank the stars that he puts up with me!  He’s one of a kind!!!!!
