Today’s bad mommy award goes to….

….me!

Alex had her first sleep-over at a friend’s house last night.  She was really nervous, but equally excited.  When I dropped her off, she ran off to play with her friends and have fun at the birthday party.  She came back for a kiss and a hug, and said she would be fine.

Katie and I came home and watched a movie with snacks, and had a little sleep-over of our own.  I let her sleep in my bed, so we both laid down together at 9PM, with me having the fullest intentions of getting up after she fell asleep. Well, soon enough we were both snoring.

This morning after I had my regular phone conversation with Shawn-he’s in Fort Mac-I realized that I had a VoiceMail.  She called last night-twice!  I almost cried!  I called her friend’s house right away, and it turns out that it was not serious, she just wanted to say goodnight.  I feel so bad!  She didn’t care though, she laughed when I told her that Katie and I were snoring so loud I couldn’t hear the phone.

Mental note-next time she is sleeping at a friend’s house, I’ll put the phone next to my bed!

I love my library!

Well, I miss the EPL for sure.  I miss the ease of using the website, I miss that you can check out music, I miss the ‘bestsellers’ wall, which meant that even though you might be number 1502 on the waiting list for a book, you just might get lucky and find it there!

The library here has a website, but no spot to list titles of books that I want to read, I can renew or place holds on books on it too-just like EPL, it’s not the most user-friendly system for sure.

You wanna know what I really love though?  The librarians are the SAME ladies that worked there when I was a kid!  They recognized me and everything!  One of the approached me and Katie to tell me about the pre-school reading group and to see if she would be interested.  Another one called me the other day to tell me about the ‘Paws to Read’ program wondering if my oldest would like it.  Today Alex went into the library and read to a dog!  It was so much fun, and of course the bad mommy forgot the camera!  If they hear us talking about a book they offer to help find it, and if they can’t find it right away they will put it aside for us when they do.

Makes me realize that my love of reading might not have just been my parents encouragement, that these great librarians may have played a part in it too!

I wonder if they still have the summer reading contests?  I used to love those!

Hi ho, hi ho, it’s off to the gym I go!

So, I’ve been diagnosed with HBP.  My brother informed me that he’s been diagnosed as being type 2 diabetic since the spring-I’m the only one who knows as my mother and father would flip out!  So, hubby and I have made a commitment to each other that we are both going to work hard at getting fit and eating healthier.

Today I went to the gym.  It wasn’t so bad, not very busy for a Saturday afternoon.  I went on the treadmill for 20 minutes, then did some minor weight stuff, then went on the treadmill again for another 20 before I stopped.  My ankle got a blister!  I bought my new sneakers a couple of months ago, but they haven’t gotten a good workout yet.  It’s not a huge blister, so they should be broken in soon enough.

I felt good about getting out, but you wanna know the most depressing part of it?  I ran into a friend who is one of the most fit and muscular guys I know.  And he was moaning about going to the gym.  He hates it and goes 5-6 times a week.  Isn’t that depressing?  I’m hoping that once I get a bit more fit it will become something I look forward to, instead of something I look to avoid.

My nephew.

My nephew who is less than nine months old has developed a lump on his leg.  It is not painful to him, the Dr originally thought that it was a hematoma from his immunization needles.  Well, now it’s getting red.  The dr. has put him on antibiotics thinking that it is an infection, and she has drawn a circle around it and said if the redness or swelling goes beyond that circle to bring him in right away.  My sister in law is a nurse, so I’m confident that he will be watched like a hawk, but I’m still panicking.  Poor little guy, I wonder what it is?  And, what is the next step if the antibiotics don’t get rid of it?

Snow day.

So, for all my friends in Alberta, in NS they have snow days.  Days where if the weather is too nasty, they call off school.  As a SAHM, it’s a good day.  Usually all extra-curricular activities are called off as well, so it’s nice and relaxing for us.  Next year when I’m a student myself, it won’t be so nice.  As a rule, the University doesn’t call off classes unless it’s really, really bad, and even then will just call off one segment of the day at a time (AM classes could be cancelled, but not PM if things clear up.)  I’m sure there will be more than a few days when the kids are coming along with me-which I’m sure they will love!

We had a nice big breakfast, played in the snow for a while, played Wii-I love the golf game that came with it!-and are heading out for supper.  The weather has cleared up now, there’s just a wind warning and we won’t be going to far.

All I could do was laugh….

….because if I didn’t I’d probably cry!

Last night we got a dump of what we call ‘heart attack snow’-heavy, wet nasty stuff.  So I gear up me and the kids this AM-snow day for Alex, her first ever!-and I head out to shovel.  I got the driveway done, and went to help out at my elderly neighbor’s place.  Luckily my step-dad came home and got out the snow blower so I didn’t have to do too much of her driveway.  Anyway when I was all done, the kids stayed in the yard, and I went in.  I had worn a pair of hubby’s rubber boots outside, with this kind of snow it’s all about staying dry, it’s not usually that cold.  So, as I was taking them off, I must have twisted my leg the wrong way, because all of a sudden I get a horrible cramp in my calf.  Horrible, worse than any pregnancy cramp!  I’m sitting on the floor yelling, cussing, and trying not to faint-I don’t do well with pain!-thank goodness the kids weren’t in the house, they shouldn’t see me that way!

Finally I get it calmed down somewhat, and I begin to take the other boot off.  What happens?  Go ahead, guess!

That’s right-I cramp up the other leg!  Man, oh man, it hurt like an SOB!  I am still in pain somewhat.  I had to laugh, it was too ridiculous not to!!!

Stupid, stupid, stupid….

Stupid Dr for picking up on my muttered complaint that the last birth control pills I was on caused headaches.  Stupid him for knowing that there’s a family history of high blood pressure on my father’s side.  Stupid genes from my father that I inherited for causing high blood pressure.  Stupid me for being overweight.  Stupid, stupid, stupid.

So, I have high blood pressure.  Blagh.  The Dr wants to see me next week and will only renew my birth control pills for one month at a time until it gets lower.  If it doesn’t, then he wants to see me come off the birth control.  He wants me to start losing weight, he said a loss of 3-5 pds can be the equivalent of taking 1 blood pressure pill a day.  I’ll see him again next week, I guess by cutting out some of my caffeine intake (so much for my new espresso machine!) and drinking more water I can make a bit of a difference.  I need to lose weight, I know that.  I really don’t want to go on blood pressure drugs, and I definately don’t want to come off of birth control pills.

Oh, and Katie has an ear infection.  I should have stayed in bed today!

Is there an easier way?

To re-size photos for blogging?  Right now I take them from the pictures folder, open them in paint, resize them, save them as something different, then post to my blog.  Is there an easier way?

One of my new year’s resolutions

Is to go back to school, and also to find after-school care for my girls!  The state of daycare/preschool/afterschool care is deplorable here!  My youngest has been on waiting lists for any day of preschool since September.  I had one place call me, and I was ready to accept over the phone.  When I checked it out however, there was something about the place I just didn’t like.

None of the daycares here offer after-school programs, the school that the girls will be going to doesn’t have anything either.  I am looking at using the daycare on campus, but that is an hour round trip for me.  So, if I have the bad luck of having a course after they get out of school, I may have to make the trip to campus 2 times on those days (drive over for class, drive back to pick up the kids, drive to campus again, then drive home for the day).  Blagh.  This is going to be my mission for the year-find a local sitter/afterschool care for my kids!!!
